The fabulous Constantinople of the last century in vintage photographs
Achille Samandji, a photographer of the Sultan's court, and Eugène Dalleggio, accompany readers on a penetrating, sensitive, and multifaceted tour of the city over the years 1898 to 1935. Both photographers, albeit devoted servants of the Byzantine myth of the city, saw Constantinople as the mother of all its different peoples rather than as a symbol of nationalism. Hence, they were able to capture the mosaic of the city's myriad facets with an astonishing and unexpected freedom.
