The Byzantine mural mosaics of Thessaloniki, masterpieces of Byzantine Art of great historical importance, have not yet received the attention they deserve. That is why we considered it a national obligation to present these treasures in a scientifically documented volume with full and excellent illustration. Completion of conservation and restoration works on the Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki, after the destructive earthquakes of 1978, permitted full and detailed photographing and study of the mosaics. This volume aspires to fill a conspicuous gap in the bibliography on the subject, since there are no modern publications of the mosaics adorning the major Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki aimed at both specialist and lay readers.he surviving mosaic decoration in the Rotunda, Hosios David, Hagia Sophia and the Holy Apostles churches, as well as in the St Demetrios and the Acheiropoietos basilicas, is presented with superb illustrations and informative texts, which enhance the aesthetic values of the monuments and promote these treasures in Greece and internationally, making them accessible to all connoisseurs of Byzantine Art.
