When St Paul visited Athens and found the city "full of idols" – full of shrines to the gods – he recognised and described the Athenians as the "most religious" (Acts 17:22), the most god-fearing people he had come across. But that literally shook him and enabled him to enter immediately into a dialogue with them was the altar with the inscription: "To the Unknown God". So St Paul adds: "What therefore you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you" (Acts 17:23). Here, expressed in a few words, is the most profound and divinely inspired diagnosis of what the Greek soul is.
